No telemóvel:

No PC:

Every now and then I come across a post on the Fediverse on the subject “not @ me” and I always find it interesting to see the point to which people go to stand for their right to use this formula in order not to receive any response to whatever subject they are writing or venting about! They even become aggressive and impolite!

From my stand point, this is a very easy way to avoid having to reply to someone with a different opinion and I can't understand it unless I look at it from the perspective of someone who is extremely selfish. I can't even fathom the reason why someone would want to say something in the middle of a crowd and expect/force everybody else not to answer, no matter what he/she/they is/are saying! Why would someone do that in the first place?! And, how come that someone might think he/she/they is/are entitled the right to deprive the others from their own rights?! Is freedom of speech something that is only good when applied to oneself?! Can I deprive the others from the rights that I treasure so much?!

This issue is also related to my first bad experience on the Fediverse: after more than two decades on the Internet, I came across a lady that felt very offended because I had replied to a “not @ me”. I didn't know the meaning of that at that time because I didn't use to use certain networks. I wasn't impolite and I apologised. And I kept receiving aggressive replies to my apologies! I stopped, obviously!

How come that someone's right to “not @ me” can take precedence over their duty to respect the others? Can't anyone make a mistake these days anymore? Perhaps it would be good if those people who fight with such aggressiveness for their “God given” right to “not @ me” started learning some manners too! They come handy everywhere!

And, no, I'm not going to use it!

Automatic privacy

This is a question that we should be asking ourselves... And, if we did, we would find the answer very quickly: because we allow them to!

We allow Google, Facebook and their families to read everything that we write. We have no private life for these companies. They don't care that we want to keep our lives and conversations private!

But, you ask, “Why should I care? I don't have anything to hide!”

Well, let me ask you this: When you're talking to a friend at your favourite café, do you speak in such a loud voice that everybody can hear you? And, when they don't listen to your conversation, do you make sure that they pay attention to your dialogue?! I thought so!

So, it doesn't matter if you have anything to hide or not. It doesn't matter what you talk about. The point is that those who were not invited to have dinner with us shouldn't sit at our table and listen to us talking about the football match or the film we watched, that beautiful person we saw when we were coming to the café, the new car we're planning to buy or our future family plans! This is what matters!

Until some years ago, you had to use PGP to avoid being spied on by the big tech. But, we must admit, it was a bit too techie!

Then came Tutanota and ProtonMail and other email services that provide true privacy and security to your conversations. But you needed to have your own domain to keep the same email address or create a new one.

In 2016 p≡p came to life! And, with it, you can use your regular email service and start to use email safely! And, what's best, you don't need to be a techie to use it!

It offers “Automatic privacy”, “End-to-end encryption” and...

It's “Fully decentralized”!

Fully decentralized

The only thing that you need to do is to install Mozilla Thunderbird and the p≡p add-on and set up your regular email account in Thunderbird. You can also install the app from your regular app store and read the same emails on your smartphone. Thunderbird and the p≡p app will sync all email for you automatically!!!

Then, invite your family and friends to use it too and start to build your trusted email community.

Pretty Easy Privacy is completely Open Source, free and will ensure that all your emails are well protected and that your communications stay as they always should have been: secure and private!

February is the month that marks my entrance into the Fediverse. It was in 2019, after I had deleted my mainstream social accounts.

I started by opening an account on Mastodon but, after a year, I was banned from mastodon dot social without any reason or explanation. (You can read that story here if you like: account suspension — Escrito à máquina...)

While, at first, I was upset, I came to realise that that was the best thing they could have done to me!

Being banned from mastodon dot social made look for alternatives and I found them! I have discovered – Mastodon (PT), a friendly Portuguese community; Pleroma, Friendica, Diaspora, Misskey and the one I really think is the The ultimate network — Escrito à máquina...: Hubzilla.

XMPP has been around since 1999 and it is really such a power standard that we can use for our on-line communications that it is difficult for me to understand how it is possible that so many people aren't aware of its potentialities and live under the restrictive dependence of the big corporations that exploit them.

No one should have to change their favourite IM client to be able to talk to friends and family as they don't have to change their car just because they want to drive to a nearby town to visit family! And that's possible with XMPP. Moreover, it's also possible to talk securely and privately using one of the many XMPP clients like And you can also create private and encrypted groups with this client. is a fork of Conversations and I find it to be better organised and with better support than the later.

If you haven't tried it, I high commend it. It is a very powerful communication tool that puts in our hands all the power of the XMPP universal messaging standard!

Zotlabs|Hubzilla –

Well, my friends, I think that my quest for the best platform (IMHO) on the #Fediverse has reached its end! I've found HUBZILLA!

I already knew about its existence but I hadn't decided to try it yet. It was only after a friend asked me if I “hadn't tried a bit of Hubzilla” that I decided to give it a try! And I finally discovered that this was the network that I'd been looking for since I started blogging! Had I started using it — instead of Mastodon — and I wouldn't have ever suffered the disappointment of being banned by the stupid staff of certain well known instance!

So, why is Hubzilla the ultimate network in the whole Fediverse?

Well, it looks great!

Your posts and photos look really great, even on big screens!

It has no silly character limit!

It supports Markdown!

It connects to Mastodon, Friendica, Diaspora and many other networks!

It has tons of interesting and useful features like the possibility of creating webpages and using WebDAV to access and share your files!

You can create up to ten channels!

Your identity is nomadic, which means that you own your identity and it isn't liked to any server. You can move it to any other server at any time!

And you can clone your channel to any number of other servers. If one goes down, you just need to log in to another and keep blogging! They are all always in sync!

Here is my new home on the great Fediverse:

João Pinheiro –

And you can check its clones on the following links:

And... These are the reasons that allow me to conclude that Hubzilla is the ultimate network! But you'll have to find that out by yourselves!

Oh! Have I already said that it looks great?!

Being a very curious person and a teacher always in the pursue of innovative means to convey the message and to help my students develop their skills and evolve into better human beings has been the drive for my willingness to learn more and explore new ways of doing things.

Since a very early age, around my 12 years of age, when computers started to be a thing in Portugal, I had the luck of being given one by my grandfather. It opened the door for more exploration and new discoveries.

One area that I must confess I'm very fond of is social networking. Another one is communication. Well, social networking is a form of communication. I also like photography very much! And many other things... But, let's not allow this list to grow bigger...

So, my main use of the Internet revolves around communicating with others, whether it is through social networks or any tool that allows the communication with others and also sharing/viewing photography related sites.

I consider myself an advanced GNU/Linux user. Not because I can code or because I can do very advanced “operations” using the power of GNU/Linux operating systems, but because I've used many different GNU/Linux OSes over more than 20 years, I can install them and I can set them up according to my needs and I use them 100% of the time I'm on my computer. (I have Windows on a VM because, sometimes, I really have to use it.) And because I've been able to solve all my problems with computers by myself with the help of the great community of GNU/Linux enthusiasts that kindly share their knowledge with us. Thanks to them I've also been able to set up my small home network. I've even built some of the computers I've used through these years! And everything works fine! Not bad for a teacher of English, right?! I've always loved tinkering with machines...

Recently I got really tired of being forced to use Windows at my school because the GNU/Linux distribution that is installed on the computers is so outdated that it can't simply be used... And I also got very tired of having to open three, four or more different webpages and enter my credentials on each of them every hour! Besides being an absolutely tedious task, it is also very time consuming!

Moreover, there is also the problem of not being able to use my usual programmes, nor is it possible for me to solve some issues, because I'm not the system administrator and I was not given administrator rights.

So, after having talked about the problems that I commonly face at school when using the classroom computers, we came up with the idea of using a Live GNU/Linux distro.

And this was the beginning of my quest...

The Gulag Archipelago

This is just a very short post to let you know that I've just finished listening to the abridged version of “The Gulag Archipelago”, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

When I first talked about the book I had said: “What a great book! What an enormous human experience!”

Today I feel that I must add a little piece of information: “What an awesome piece of literature!!!

If you haven't read or heard it, do yourself a favour and read or hear it! It might even change who you are or what you believe in! It's really that GREAT!
